SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 33

Requesting the United States army corps of engineers study flood
control of the Tygart Valley River.
Whereas, In February, 1994, the Tygart Valley River at
Philippi rose to its second highest flood level on record,
reaching 25.8 feet. The highest was in November, 1985, when the
flood level reached 31.83 feet; and
Whereas, Also in February, 1994, the Tygart Valley River at
Belington rose to its fourth highest flood level on record,
reaching 18.9 feet. In November, 1985, the flood level reached
23.65 feet at Belington. Other floods affecting Belington were
July, 1912, when the level reached 20.3 feet and July, 1988, when
the level reached 21.7 feet; and
Whereas, The economic growth and stability of communities
along the lower stretches of the Tygart Valley River have been
drastically affected by recent flooding; and
Whereas, The necessity of a flood control study of the
Tygart Valley River is of vital importance to the lives of the
citizens and businesses along its banks; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate:
That the Senate hereby requests that the United States army
corps of engineers conduct a thorough and complete study of floodcontrol along the banks of the Tygart Valley River; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to
forward a copy of this resolution to the district engineer of the
United States army corps of engineers.
